Get Space Opens Newest Facility in NE Portland in Nearly 20 Years

Starting off with a bang, Get Space celebrates the opening of its facility at Portland and Broadway (PBWY). This location is the newest facility to serve Northeast Portland in almost two decades! The multi-level adaptive reuse offers over 500 units throughout 64,800 sf to serve the needs of Roseway, Madison South, Hollywood, Montavilla, and Laurelhurst neighbors.

During construction, PBWY was decorated with colorful graffiti. While the art was later removed, it foreshadowed the colorful future of this site, both literally and figuratively. The bold blue and green color palette of the facility is sure to catch the eye of commuters on I-84, and the company is splashing color at the self storage industry in general. According to Ben Bradley, Co-Founder and Partner, "We make cool, imaginative buildings that will be fun to look at. The odds and ends inside each unit are unique and storied, so why can't our facilities be as well?!"

The project will be turned over to Extra Space Storage for management. This collaboration has a fascinating history, as the previously completed Get Space locations in Hillsboro, Oregon, (H15 & H73) are both successfully managed by Extra Space.

Get Space Begins Construction on Second Portland, OR, Self Storage

Construction has begun--not a moment too soon--on Get Space's Portland & Columbia site. Portland & Columbia (lovingly known as PCOL) is one of Get Space's largest projects to date, weighing in at just over 100,000 square feet of ground-up development. A project of this scale requires lots of planning and design work before soil is ever turned, as evidenced by the huge stacks of permit drawings sent to the city in late 2015 for routine review. Happily, progress on Get Space PCOL has continued at a quick clip, thanks in part to the contributions of contractor Perlo Construction.

Portland & Columbia is located in the heart of industrial northeast Portland, next door to Portland International Airport. This location is easy to access from both I-5 and I-205, which is convenient for neighbors throughout Alberta, Maywood Park, Beaumont - Wilshire, Piedmont, and Alameda. The facility is slated to open in late 2016.

Approval Received for Get Space's Mixed Municipality Facility

In business, it's all about who you know. In building and development, it's all about knowing who needs to know.

When Get Space wanted to build its Vancouver & Ward facility, it was important to know which jurisdictions should be advised of (and approve) the brand-new, all-the-bells-and-whistles self storage facility. While the site has a Vancouver address (6815 NE Ward Rd, Vancouver, WA 98682), it technically lies outside city limits, in Clark County. Because the city of Vancouver manages the roads in this area, both municipalities had to review and approve the project.

Naturally, it was with excitement that Get Space recently received the 'go ahead' from both Clark County and Vancouver City to proceed. Given the prominent street corner location of Get Space's second SW Washington location, the much anticipated facility must be bright and beautiful.  When this new Vancouver Get Space opens in mid 2017, it will no doubt be a focal point along Fourth Plain.

The Jambalaya for Jackson|Main Please!

It takes a lot of hard work and years of experience to be really amazing at one thing. It's hard to imagine what it takes to be amazing at three very different things, so we plan to ask Jackson|Main Architecture the secret to their success. The Seattle-based firm teamed up with Get Space to assist with three very unique Portland self storage projects, namely Portland & York, Portland & Powell, and Portland & Johnson Creek

Jackson|Main Architecture is sized just right to execute these Get Space projects with speed and efficiency. The medium-sized staff is large enough to tackle each facility quickly, but small enough to personally listen to our needs and build a fantastic working relationship. The firm's background in storage helped them jump into each project with both feet, and they understand the varied needs of each project. While these Portland locations include two totally different adaptive reuses and one ground-up infill, they all will reflect the same fresh Get Space attitude and funky charm. We know that PORK, PPOW, and PJON are in good hands with Jackson|Main Architecture, and we're eager to see the final products.

Old Warehouses Make Great Conversions

"The beautiful thing about preservation is you begin with something that already exists and therefore is already local. By definition, a preservation project is an homage to earlier cultures and mentalities to which you can add a new dimension, a new function, a new beauty or appeal." - Rem Koolhaas

Get Space feels pretty winning with the announcement of its "hat trick" self storage facility at Hillsboro & Witch Hazel (HWH). The third location in Hillsboro, Oregon, sits just east of Aloha, near the Meadow Oaks, Arbor Roses, and Witch Hazel neighborhoods. These areas have been growing rapidly, and this facility addresses the continued demand for storage seen at its sister facilities, H15 and H73, both completed less than a year ago.

Unlike H15, and H73, this Get Space will reuse an existing warehouse, which is a win for the environment due to the decreased embodied energy in demolition and construction compared to a typical brand new facility. The single-level facility will include nearly 60,000 square feet and will offer a fantastic variety of self storage options. The highly secure site will be easily accessible from Highway 8 (Tualatin Valley HWY) and Brookwood Avenue.

To Elizabeth Main, Awesome Comes Naturally

When it comes to being awesome at Get Space, we have to work at it.  For Elizabeth Main however, awesome comes naturally. We can't help but feel bad for everyone else that doesn't get to work with her, but she's a part of Get Space now! She actually became a part of the Get Space gang late last year and immediately integrated. While Elizabeth's job description is "Content Writer", she is far more!

Elizabeth comes to Get Space with a Master of Architecture from the University of Utah and a sick skill set. She immediately began practicing Architecture right out of college and became a fully licensed Architect in super speedy time right before her first child was born. While adapting to life with a child, Elizabeth remains a crucial part of Get Space by offering her amazing skills whenever possible through content writing, interior design, community outreach, public relations, social media, and so much more.

Daniel attended college at the same time as Elizabeth and knew what stuff she was made of. Always driven and bold, Get Space knew they needed her.

Welcome Elizabeth!  #naturallyawesome

Vertical Construction is a Constant at Vancouver & 139th

When a project is spread across five buildings and 76,000+ square feet, steel erection becomes quite the feat of engineering and time management. Such is the case in the much anticipated Vancouver & 139th Get Space, when vertical construction recently began under the direction of contractor Sea Con. By the summer of 2016, the site's steel structure will surround 570 self storage, all with premium ground-floor drive-up access.

Get Space Co-Founder and Principal Danial Lyman views this as a pivotal moment in the construction of V139. "It's exciting to watch the steel go up, because our site goes from an unassuming, boring plane into a three dimensional playground in a very short time. This is the phase where the project becomes 'real'."

This ground-up development is only one in a handful of Get Space facilities currently under construction. In addition to the already completed H73 and H15, the company has two additional locations slotted to open in 2016 (PBWY & HWH). However, this much anticipated project will be the first Get Space in Vancouver, Washington. Plans are already in the works for a second Vancouver location (VWAR), and the company continues to search for perfect markets for new self storage facilities.

Get Space is Creating a New Landmark in SE Portland

Get Space's Portland & Powell project is sure to create a bit of a stir once construction begins as the existing two story warehouse will be expanded vertically to five levels of modern self storage spaces. Not only will it be the newest storage facility in several years, but it will also become a landmark for the area.

The warehouse, located at 3220 SE 19th Avenue in Portland, Oregon, has been housing used luxury automobiles for the past 8 years. The tenant, Grand Prix Motors, sells some amazingly beautiful cars, but is running out of space. With GPM's relocation, Get Space will overhaul the warehouse and mix the existing with the shiny new.

Located only blocks from Fred Meyer's headquarters, this location will serve the Brooklyn, Ladd's Addition, Richmond, and Creston-Kenilworth neighborhoods, among others. Being located south of Division and a short jog from downtown Portland over the Ross Island Bridge, make this an ideal location.

Coming in 2017, Portland & Powell will be operated by Extra Space Storage, and will shortly be a prominent landmark of the area.

Get ready Portland, better storage is coming!

Get Space's Downtown Portland Location Early Release Sneak Peek

When Get Space announced its newest facility at 2211 NW York Street in Portland, OR, the city and industry were abuzz. Not only would this be one of Get Space's largest self storage facilities to date (at roughly 130,000 sf), but it would also be a needed addition of storage space in the under-served downtown Portland area. Development is booming in Forest Park, Hillside, Slabtown, Nob Hill, and the Pearl, but most residential additions are tight on space.

"We're working with a great group of Architects and Engineers, and while the design, engineering, and permitting are nearing completion, we wanted to share an early release sneak peek," said Daniel Lyman. "The Portland & York facility is going to be the 'pièce de résistance' for Get Space and for storage in the area."

Construction is expected to begin Q2 of 2016 with an opening early 2017 bringing around 950 storage units of varying sizes in the newest facility around. "We're excited to be a part of and complement all the other development activity in the area," said Benjamin Bradley.
